Toward assisted DJing

Transition scheduling and an AI agent in the loop are the next pieces: more help with the mix, more time to be part of the party.

The idea behind Quadra

Stay in the room.

The party has wound down, a few friends are still around, and there is plenty of music left to play. Quadra starts there: make a big library easier to explore and a good mix less dependent on practiced DJ technique, so there is room to have a conversation, too.

The foundations are already working in the development app: track analysis, recommendations, and a four-deck DJ engine with cues, loops, sync, EQ, and a custom effects rack. You can mix on a laptop with no extra hardware. The next step is to connect those foundations to transition scheduling and an agent that helps with the mix.

01

Bring the whole collection.

The native library is designed for 100,000 tracks. Browse local files, artwork, metadata, and waveform previews, with playlists to organize the music you want close at hand.

02

Find the next track.

BPM analysis, beat-grid fitting, and musical key analysis feed a recommendation engine that helps you explore what belongs together. Follow a suggestion into a different corner of your collection.

03

At home on your Mac.

A carefully composed native interface built with SwiftUI and AppKit. On-device analysis uses MLX, Metal, and Core ML to put Apple silicon to work on your music, from beat grids to musical key and similarity.

Development direction

A little help with the handover.

The goal is to spend less of the evening managing transitions. Scheduling them and bringing an agent into the loop are the missing pieces now being developed.

  1. Working today: the foundations.

BPM analysis, grid fitting, key analysis, and recommendations provide musical context. The DJ engine supplies the decks, transport, mixer, and effects.

  2. In progress: transition scheduling.

Connect that musical context to decisions about when and how tracks hand over. Automatic transition scheduling is still being developed.

  3. In progress: an agent in the loop.

Build assistance that helps manage the mix with less technical effort, leaving more attention for choosing music and chatting with friends. Agent-assisted DJing is a development goal.

Inside the DJ engine

Some character under the hood.

Four decks, cues, loops, sync, and a custom effects engine tuned to Arhythmetic Units’ own taste. There is plenty to play with when you want to get hands-on.

Thru-zero tempo. With key sync.

Pull playback down to a stop and keep going into reverse, with the musical key held steady as speed changes. A little tape-deck freedom in the DSP.

Ten custom Color FX.

From tape-flavored echoes to granular texture and stereo movement, with a performance knob on each internal mixer channel.

  • Dub EchoTape-flavored repeats.
  • GrainScattered live texture.
  • SpiralRhythmic stereo motion.
